About Marriott STARS & Luminous

Marriott STARS and Luminous are special programs from Marriott designed for premium and luxury brands. When you book a STARS/Luminous rate through a designated travel advisor, the price is usually very close to Marriott’s standard flexible rate, but you can receive extra perks such as breakfast for two, a $100 property credit, room upgrades, and more. If you already have Marriott Bonvoy elite status, the benefits can also stack, so you may be able to enjoy the best of both. Marriott also has a very wide hotel footprint, and there are many properties participating in STARS/Luminous, so this can be useful for most travelers looking for a higher-quality stay.

  • Complimentary daily breakfast for two (usually full restaurant breakfast)
  • Property credit (most hotels offer $100 per stay)
  • Room upgrade (subject to availability at check-in, sometimes by as many as two categories)
  • Early check-in & late check-out (subject to availability)
  • Welcome amenity and free Wi-Fi
  • Some hotels also offer extra promotions, such as 15%-25% off or third night free deals

You generally cannot access this program by booking directly on Marriott’s website. You must book through an authorized travel advisor in order to receive the extra Marriott STARS/Luminous benefits. In many cases, the price through an advisor is about the same as booking directly on Marriott.com, so if you can find a reliable advisor, you are essentially getting the above perks at no extra cost. Our US Credit Cards 101 site is also authorized to book Marriott STARS/Luminous rates. If you are interested, you can contact hotel assistant mh (WeChat ID: metahacker; note: 酒店预订), and we can help with your booking.

For example, here is the W Nashville in the United States. If you book through our channel, you may be able to access an Exclusive rate for just $390, with breakfast for two and other perks included. Even better, you may be able to book a suite using a special Luminous Complimentary offer for only $10 more than a standard room. That suite may still be eligible for a further upgrade as well. If you stay two nights or more, you may also receive $100 + $125 in property credits, which is an outstanding value.

Participating Hotel Brands and Footprint

STARS covers luxury brands, and nearly all hotels under the following brands participate:

  • The Ritz‑Carlton & Ritz‑Carlton Reserve
  • St.Regis
  • EDITION
  • Bulgari Hotels & Resorts
  • The Luxury Collection

Luminous is aimed at premium/upscale brands. Common participating brands include:

  • JW Marriott、W Hotels、The Luxury Collection(部分)
  • Autograph Collection、Tribute Portfolio
  • Marriott Hotels、Renaissance Hotels、Le Méridien、Westin 等

Marriott truly is the largest hotel group today, and it has a large number of Marriott STARS/Luminous properties even in the premium and upscale segments. The U.S. alone has more than 160 participating hotels, Europe has 97, and Asia has nearly 70. Most of these hotels are located in popular tourist cities, major metro areas, and resort destinations, and with free breakfast and property credits included, they can be a great way to enjoy your vacation.

Extra Promotions

In addition to the standard benefits, many hotels also quietly load extra promotions into STARS/Luminous rates. In the example above, for instance, there is both a suite offer and an extra property credit.

If you open the booking page and review all benefits, you may find even more. In addition to the standard perks like breakfast for two, a $100 property credit, and room upgrades, this example also includes a stay-three-pay-two offer, which saves 33%. It is a great way to book a higher-end hotel at a mid-tier price.

Here is another example: STARS sometimes offers promotions such as “up to 15% off on stays of 2 nights,” as with the Tokyo Edition Ginza below. In this case, staying two nights gets you an extra 15% discount, making the rate even cheaper than booking direct. On top of that, you still get breakfast for two, property credits, room upgrades, and other benefits.

In addition, you may be able to stack credit card bonus earnings or AMEX offers. For example, the offer below is a good fit: spend $350 or more on the card and get $140 back. That can be combined with our booking channel for even better value.

How to Book Marriott STARS / Luminous

Marriott STARS and Luminous rates must be booked through an authorized travel agency; you cannot book them yourself through the official app or website. The process is otherwise similar to booking direct, and the reservation will ultimately appear in your Marriott Bonvoy account, with points and elite night credits posting normally. You can contact us in either of the following ways for booking help:

  • Email: [email protected]. Send us the hotel you are interested in, or the destination you want to visit, along with your approximate travel dates. We will check rates and get back to you with pricing and any extra benefits.
  • Hotel assistant mh: WeChat ID metahacker; note: 酒店预订
  • When booking, you will need to provide your name, Marriott member number, hotel, stay dates, and related information, similar to a normal Marriott booking.
  • For payment, Marriott STARS and Luminous bookings require you to enter your credit card number and related information at the time of booking, so you will need to complete that through the payment page we provide. All information is for one-time use only.
  • Depending on the hotel and rate, you may either prepay in full or pay at the hotel. In either case, Marriott officially charges your credit card directly.
  • After the booking is completed, you will receive an official Marriott email. If the rate line says Marriott STARS / Luminous, that confirms you will receive the associated benefits.
  • The reservation will appear in your Marriott account, and you can modify or cancel it yourself. The cancellation policy is generally the same as a regular cash rate, though terms vary by hotel.

For example, this is one of our test bookings. It clearly shows the rate as Marriott STARS / Luminous, and it can also be modified directly by the guest.

In addition to standard booking help, there are also free extra services when you book through us.

  • Pre-arrival outreach: if you want it, we can email the hotel based on your stay details, Hilton status, and elite status with other hotel programs to see whether additional benefits may be available, such as an extra upgrade or anniversary decorations.
  • Complaint assistance: if you run into issues during your stay, we can provide free help with complaints, including working with the hotel to resolve the problem and pursue compensation.
  • Rate monitoring: we use software to automatically track pricing for your room type, and if a lower rate appears, we may be able to rebook so you can get the better price. You do not need to monitor it yourself.

Our team is very experienced with hotel loyalty programs, and we do have an advantage in these areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I book with points, free night certificates, or points + cash? No. All bookings are pure cash rates.
  • Do I still earn points and Night/Stay credit as usual? Yes. It works the same as a direct Marriott booking.
  • Can I use certificates or other account-based coupons after booking? Yes. This is a cash booking, so it works the same as booking a cash rate directly on Marriott’s website.
  • Can credit card payments still stack with hotel bonus points, AMEX offers, Chase offers, and similar promotions? Yes. From the payment perspective, it functions just like booking direct on Marriott’s website.
  • Can this stack with other Marriott promotions? Yes. This is effectively a direct Marriott cash booking.
  • Can it stack with Marriott elite benefits?:For overlapping benefits, you generally receive whichever is better; different benefits can complement each other. Of course, it does not hurt to mention both at check-in, since that may make it easier to receive an upgrade or other perks.
  • Can anyone use this booking method? Is it a corporate or contract rate? Anyone can contact us to book. As long as the booking is made through our channel, it includes the extra benefits. This is not a contract rate, and there is no risk of being asked for special eligibility. You can simply present your ID at the front desk and check in normally, just like with a regular Marriott direct booking.
