Citing “abnormally high” fuel prices, Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA) have both announced higher fuel surcharges for tickets issued between May and June. On most routes, the surcharge increase is close to 100%—nearly double. Notably, both airlines had previously signaled that prices would rise starting in June, but they have now moved that increase forward to May. Industry analysts believe that if fuel market conditions do not improve soon, more airlines are likely to follow by adding or increasing fuel surcharges.
Both airlines also impose substantial fuel surcharges on award tickets for their own flights, so if you're planning to book an award ticket, try to do so before May!
