As we mentioned earlier, the Japanese government had been considering easing travel restrictions. Today (August 31), the Fumio Kishida government announced that starting September 7, Japan will allow group tours without requiring guides to accompany travelers, which effectively means visitors will be able to travel independently. South Korea also announced that it will eliminate the pre-departure COVID test requirement for incoming travelers.

Japan

According to a Kyodo News report, starting September 7:

  • Japan’s daily entry cap will increase from 20,000 people to 50,000
  • Foreign visitors from all countries will also be allowed to enter on group tours without guides

Travelers only need to purchase a travel package that includes airfare and accommodations, and can then visit attractions freely based on that day’s plans. However, travel agencies will still need to assume responsibility for accidents or unexpected incidents during the trip.

At present, travelers entering Japan who have already received 3 vaccine doses do not need to take a pre-departure COVID test. Entry still requires obtaining a visa for group travel.

South Korea

At the same time, South Korea announced that starting September 3, travelers entering South Korea will no longer need to obtain a pre-departure COVID test report. This new rule applies to people from any country, regardless of whether they are residents of South Korea.

However, the requirement to take a COVID test within one day after arrival remains in place.
