What is PointBreaks?

PointBreaks is a promotion offered by IHG Rewards Club in which members can redeem just 5,000 points per night at select hotels, regardless of the hotel’s regular award price. Under normal circumstances, redeeming an award night at an IHG property usually costs 10,000-50,000 points. So for some hotels, this promotion is effectively a 90% discount on points.

Highlights among this quarter’s participating hotels

Unfortunately, compared with previous rounds, the overall quality of participating hotels this time is not as strong.

InterContinental (IC)

InterContinental Mendoza is located inland in Argentina, South America, near the Andes. For those of us living long-term in North America or mainland China, it is indeed quite far away. But if your travel plans happen to take you there, it could be a very good option.

Crowne Plaza

Crowne Plaza Wakkanai is located in Hokkaido, Japan, and could be a nice choice for a trip there.

Crowne Plaza Beirut is located in Lebanon

Crowne Plaza Moncton Downtown is located in New Brunswick, Canada Crowne Plaza Little Rock is located in Little Rock, Arkansas

Crowne Plaza Auburn Hills is located in Michigan

Crowne Plaza Bloomington MSP Airport / MOA is located in Minneapolis

Crowne Plaza Suffern-Mahwah is located in upstate New York

How to redeem

Method 1

Simply search on the IHG website for a hotel on this PointBreaks list.
If the hotel has award availability for that date, the 5,000-point-per-night rate will appear.

Method 2

On the map shown above, click the hotel you want to book, then click that hotel’s link in the pop-up menu.

step1

Then find the booking box on that hotel’s homepage, choose your dates (make sure they fall within the promotion period), click “more option,” change “rate reference” to “reward nights,” and then click “BOOK”.

step2

If the hotel still has award availability for that date, the 5,000-point-per-night rate will appear. Click “BOOK THIS ROOM” and sign in to your IHG account to complete the reservation.

step3

Bottom line

PointBreaks is one of IHG’s signature promotions. It is roughly equivalent to getting a night for $35, and it can be an excellent value no matter what category of hotel you book.
