Also, based on reader DP, when buying a Pixel 7 at a Best Buy store, sales tax is calculated on the discounted price.
Using the 128GB Pixel 7 as an example, if you trade in an iPhone 11, sales tax is based on $149. Since the iPhone 11 can get $525 in trade-in value, you end up paying nothing and still have about $15 left over on a Best Buy gift card.
If you buy the Pixel 7 online, sales tax is based on the original price, so going in store is recommended.
The Google Store Pixel 7 can also stack portal cashback (Capital One Shopping 30% cashback/Rakuten 4% cashback) + 10% Google Store credits + $100 Pixel referral credits, and you may also be able to ask customer service to price match Best Buy’s trade-in offer.
To get the 10% Google Store credits, you need to spend $9.99 on a 2TB Google One membership.

If you have an extra phone on hand, you can trade it in. Best Buy’s trade-in offer was very good at the time, with the following sample trade-in values:

- Google phones
The best value was trading in an iPhone XR for $460, bringing the final cost of the unlocked 128GB Pixel 7 down to $39 + tax (with tax calculated on the original $499 price). The Pixel 7 from the Best Buy link above is unlocked and does not need to be activated on another carrier. When ordering, make sure to choose activate later. Many users also had Amex/Chase credit card offers for Best Buy, which stacked nicely. After ordering online, once the phone arrives at your local Best Buy store, you can go pick it up. Bring your ID and the phone you plan to trade in. After the staff verifies everything, the trade-in value will be refunded back to the card originally used for payment.

Google Store also accepts trade-ins, though values were slightly lower than Best Buy’s. For example, an iPhone XR trade-in was only worth $410. If ordering from Google Store, you could chat with customer service and ask for a price match to Best Buy’s offer. Google Store trade-ins must be mailed in. After inspection, if the trade-in value is lower than the device cost, the amount is refunded back to the original payment card; if it is higher than the device cost, the full device cost is refunded, and the extra value is returned as Google Store credits. These credits can be used to buy phones or other devices, and can also be applied toward a Google Fi bill.
