Google Fi phone deals often have some very good offers. Going forward, they will be split out here from the main Fi guide.

For Google Fi phone deals, you usually need to enter a referral code at checkout.

[2020.12 Update] Yesterday Google emailed many Google Voice users (you needed to have had GV for a while), encouraging you to join Fi and offering $100 Fi credit. This offer cannot be stacked with a referral, but it can be stacked with some of Google Fi’s recent phone purchase promos.

The Terms do not specify how long you need to keep service for this sign-up offer. My guess is that, like the referral offer, you should conservatively assume you need one month of service to receive the $100 Fi credit. $100 Fi credit is enough to keep using the service for several more months. Fi is currently supported by many number-porting deals, so this may be worth considering if you want to try one out (before porting, contact customer service to get the account number and PIN).

If you want to pair this with a phone purchase deal, Google Fi’s phone promos change constantly, and trade-in offers sometimes reduce the phone’s trade-in value heavily, which can backfire. Direct purchase promos may be a better choice. For example, cheap Moto phones (without NFC) are sometimes only $49 or $99. The Samsung A71 (with NFC and Samsung Pay) is also a solid option and was $300 at the time, much cheaper than Amazon’s promo price.

  • If the promo requires number port-in, Google Voice works. GV and Fi are separate services, and you can port between them.
  • For phone purchases and port-ins, be sure to review the other Terms.

[2020.11 Update 3] The Samsung A71 (with NFC) was only $250. The previous promo price was $400, and I’m not sure why it dropped. This is a very good phone, with NFC and Samsung Pay. The earlier total Trade-in discount (discount + Fi credit) was slightly better. HT: Mr. Bo

For comparison, Amazon’s promo price for the A71 was $500. Both versions are unlocked, so the price difference was pretty large.

This A71 deal required choosing number transfer/port-in. You could use GV (see the Visible article for how to do it), but not Fi itself, which would trigger an error.

You must also bring/transfer your number to Fi within 30 days of the shipment confirmation email. Fi-to-Fi number transfers are not eligible.
If you choose to get a new number, you will not receive the $350 discount.

[2020.11 Update 2] Google launched another decent offer today: new Fi users (including add a line) could “buy” a Moto G Power/Stylus phone “for free” (neither supports NFC), with part of the value coming back as Fi Credit. If you value Fi credit at face value, this is effectively a free phone. The phones are unlocked, and Fi service can be paused if you do not need it.

Things to watch for when buying:

  • Existing users could buy through add a line from within the Fi interface, which effectively counted as opening a new account for this purpose (see Update 3)
  • If one Google account in the same browser already has Fi, other accounts may not be able to buy
  • If the account has bought a phone before, it may also be unable to buy
  • Based on the rules above, you may need to adjust your purchase strategy
  • You could stack this with Trade in (up to $500 Fi credit back). The trade-in values were pretty good, so phones like the Samsung A71 with NFC could be worth considering

You needed to keep the device active on Fi for 30 days to receive the remaining Fi credit:

If you were already using Fi, you could use Add a line to get this offer. That way, the new line only had to stay active for one month, and then you could effectively get a free phone or buy another phone at a deep discount via equivalent Fi credit. According to the terms, each family could only use this offer once. The Fi credit earned would be deposited into the primary account holder’s account. The path is shown below:

After one month, once you receive the Fi credit reward, you can close or pause that line. It appears that each family account could only do this once.

Google Fi’s “free” phone deal is back again, but you need to use Fi service for at least two months:

Out-of-pocket cost

You pay $49+4 tax for the phone, then $20+5 tax for the first month of service. Using refer credit, you get $20 toward the second month’s service (and only pay another $5 tax). In the third month, you use the returned credit $49 to pay. Your final cost is $49+4+25+5=$84 for an unlocked Moto G power phone + 4 months of service.

Editor’s note

Fi credit is not the same as cash, so this is not truly free. Still, for an Android phone, this price is decent. The 50% off Unlimited plan for 3 months is also very attractive for readers who will be leaving the US for a short period.

By the way, neither of these two Moto phones has NFC.
