This DP comes from 北美票帝. There is a small error in the original post: “On the other hand, buying tickets through an OTA can earn 3X CSR points (a CSR card linked to WeChat is coded as Travel Category).” However, the transaction shown here is coded under the TG dining category, so the submitter likely mixed it up; wechatpay has not triggered DD travel-category purchases for a long time.

In this DP, the traveler used WeChat Pay linked to a CSR card to purchase airfare on Qunar. A family member got sick, so the trip had to be canceled, which falls within the scope of CSR trip cancellation insurance. In the end, the author successfully received reimbursement checks for multiple tickets.

This is a very impressive use case, but in practice, buying airfare through WeChat Pay + an OTA does not guarantee reimbursement every time. The insurance company needs to review all documents, including translations of Chinese-language materials.

My suggestion is to use CSR with WeChat Pay for domestic China airfare whenever possible anyway, since the rewards rate is already good, and then use the insurance if you happen to run into a qualifying situation during the year. But if you abuse it and file too many times, they may stop approving claims, or they may even deny all claims originating from WeChat Pay purchases.
