We’re almost at the start of this year’s second quarter. The first quarter’s Freedom 5x categories were extremely generous—did everyone max out the $1,500 cap? In another two weeks, it’ll be time to start using the second quarter’s 5x credit card categories. There are quite a few useful categories this quarter as well. Let’s take a closer look.
Chase Freedom

Chase Freedom’s Q2 5x categories are grocery stores, the Chase Pay mobile wallet, and PayPal purchases. Chase Pay can be used at many online stores, such as Walmart, as well as in-person merchants like Starbucks and Best Buy. PayPal is even more flexible, since most online stores support PayPal. Hitting the full $1,500 cap should not be difficult.
Discover it

For Q2, Discover it overlaps with Freedom, but unfortunately its only 5% category is grocery stores. Unless you are a cardholder getting double cash back, we still recommend using the Freedom card first.
Citi Dividend
Activate here Citi Dividend’s Q2 categories are Home Depot and furniture stores. Note that Dividend’s 5% category is capped at $6,000 in spending per year, not $1,500 per quarter. The advantage is that the cap is much roomier, so if you have real spending needs in these categories, it can be worth using. Are you ready for the new year’s credit card bonus categories?
