According to this DoC update: Citi has modified the application terms for some cards, further tightening the conditions to get a sign-up bonus offer. If you have opened or closed any card from the same family in the past 24 months—ThankYou cards (ThankYou Preferred, ThankYou Premier, or Prestige), AA (American Airlines), Hilton (Hilton), or Expedia—you cannot receive a new cardmember bonus.

Examples

Citi Prestige card:

Bonus ThankYou points are not available if you have had ThankYou Preferred, ThankYou Premier or Citi Prestige cards opened or closed in the past 24 months.

Citi AA Platinum card:

American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles are not available if you have had any Citi / AAdvantage card (other than a CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage card) opened or closed in the past 24 months.

Citi

Citi has seen a lot of changes lately:

  • The sign-up bonus wait period increased from 18 months to 24 months;
  • The sign-up bonuses for ThankYou Preferred and ThankYou Premier have disappeared;
  • Citi Prestige benefits have been significantly reduced; and
  • The latest ThankYou card rewards are now mutually exclusive.

The trend is clear: sign-up bonuses are steadily shrinking, and they are getting harder to earn. The value of Citi cards appears to be declining. So for anyone who needs to apply for a Citi card, we suggest checking with Citi whether you have a Pre-Qualified Offer, which may allow you to bypass this clause. Alternatively, consider applying for a business card as a workaround. It is still unclear whether Citi will actually enforce this clause; there should be a DP coming soon.
