Citi will remove Aeromexico as a transfer partner, and points will no longer be transferable after January 25. Honestly, Aeromexico has never offered especially compelling transfer value, nor does it have many great sweet-spot redemptions, so this loss is not a huge deal. One thing worth noting is that Membership Rewards can still transfer to Aeromexico at a 1,000:1,600 ratio, which is actually quite solid.
A quick look at Aeromexico’s sweet spots:
- Business class from southern South America to Europe via Mexico City costs only 100,000 miles. Even flights from South America to Mexico City, or to any destination within Mexico, require just 62,500 points when transferred from AMEX at a 1:1.6 ratio—which is already quite good. AMEX previously offered a 1:1.92 transfer bonus, which brought the cost down to only 52,000 points in practice.
- This airline is also often a better deal than Delta on its own operated routes, with business class between Mexico and the U.S. pricing at just 25,000-40,000 miles. While that is not extraordinarily cheap when converted at the AMEX 1:1.6 ratio, Aeromexico’s best value is concentrated on its own routes, especially flights between Mexico City and major South American hubs such as São Paulo, Buenos Aires, and Santiago.
