Big congrats to the card-closure king for hitting another milestone: the add-on card got shut down! Three years ago, Citi had shut down all of his cards, but his wife’s Citi card was still untouched. Recently, his wife received a Citi promotion to add a supplemental card and earn points, so he added himself to it. Of course, there was no reward-hacking opportunity at all—Citi first locked his wife’s card, and after he contacted Citi, they forced her to get a replacement card.

They then sent his wife a letter saying that because a “no longer service” person had been added, they could only reissue a new card without that supplemental cardholder. It’s a strange move, and I really haven’t seen this kind of handling before.

Still, I’d advise everyone not to play with fire—if your wife’s account gets pulled into the closure too, it could be a costly mistake.
