The welcome bonus in the email says it expires on August 23, so if you need to apply or reapply, act fast!

Citi’s public offer has also been increased to 80,000. If you don’t want to use the inflight and airport links shared by others, you can apply directly through the official website!

This offer is very good, so I’ve added this card to the welcome offer rankings.

AA’s inflight welcome offer and airport welcome offer are both back to 80,000! Any six-digit number works for the promo code field (for example, 000000). And according to a test by a US Credit Card 101 Knowledge Planet member, he had previously been repeatedly denied, but was able to get approved with this. Note that these linked offers do carry some risk, and if you received the bonus for this card within the last 48 months, it’s unclear whether you can get it again. We’ll update if there is more news.

In addition, another user found an airport application link with an 80,000 welcome bonus and a $1,000 spending requirement. If you don’t want to enter a code above, you can apply directly using the link below.

About AA miles

AA is the world’s largest airline. It has ten hubs, so if you live in a city with one of these hubs, flying AA is very convenient. Award tickets are also easier to find, especially nonstop awards. AA still keeps its own and its partners’ basic award chart, so there are still some relatively good redemptions to be found.

My take

This was the blogger’s second Citi card. At the time, the reason for applying was to use miles for round-trip flights between China and the U.S. (70,000 miles for a round-trip economy ticket). This card has stayed basically unchanged for so long, and most people still apply because of the welcome bonus, then after one year product-change it to another no-annual-fee Citi card to get better cash back and long-term holding value. For example:

So just pay attention to the higher welcome bonus.

How to apply

  • The welcome bonus will be posted to your AA frequent flyer account. If you already have an AA frequent flyer number before applying, please enter it when you apply. If not, it’s recommended that you first register for an AA membership on the AA website to get a frequent flyer number. If you don’t enter one, a number will be assigned to you automatically, but you’ll need to call Citi to ask for the exact number.
  • If you received the welcome bonus for this card within the last 48 months, you won’t be eligible for the bonus this time
  • If within the last 48 months you product-changed another card that had received a welcome bonus within that same 48-month window into an AA card, this application will not be eligible for the welcome bonus.
  • Citi application status link or call: 877-343-4118
  • 8/65/95 rule: You can apply for only one personal card every 8 days, only two personal cards every 65 days, and only one business card every 95 days. This refers to application submission limits, regardless of whether you were approved or not.
  • 24/48-month welcome bonus rule: If you have received a welcome bonus on a ThankYou Points card within the past 24 months, you will not be eligible to receive the bonus again. For AA products, the restriction is 48 months, but both rules apply only to the same card; there is no restriction across different card families.
  • You can call the reconsideration line (800-763-9795) to speed up the credit card approval process or ask a representative to review a denied credit card application again.
  • Having a Citi Checking/Gold relationship may help with your application.
