Chase and Instacart Partnership

Chase and Instacart have been doing a lot together lately. They launched co-branded credit cards, and now they’re also giving free Instacart memberships and monthly credits to nearly all Chase-issued cards. If you already shop on Instacart, this is a pretty sweet deal. Even better, if you’ve had an Instacart membership before, you can use this to get up to an additional year of membership.

The promotion runs through December 31, 2027, and you must redeem the offer during that period. This offer is for U.S. users only and cannot be used on Instacart Canada.

If you have questions about Instacart, you can read our review:

Card-by-card details

The membership length and credit amount differ by card, and this chart lays it out very clearly:

  • Top-tier Reserve cards: $15 monthly credit, 12 months of membership
  • Mid-tier Preferred cards: $15 monthly credit, 6 months of membership
  • No-annual-fee Freedom cards: $10 quarterly credit, 3 months of membership
  • Less commonly used Slate cards: no credit, 3 months of membership

How to use it

If you don’t already have an Instacart account, you’ll need to sign up for one first.

All you need to do is add the eligible Chase card to your account and set it as the default payment method to activate these benefits. Again, each Chase card can get its own membership and credit independently. So it may be possible to open multiple accounts or stagger the timing to collect several months of benefits—feel free to try it.

Membership

After adding the card, you can go to the Instacart membership page to activate your membership. If you already have a paid membership, it will automatically be extended until the end of the free benefit period. For example, a Reserve card would automatically push it back by one year before billing starts again.

Also, once the free membership period ends, Instacart will automatically renew it at $99 per year and charge your card. They’ll send you a reminder 30 days in advance, and you can cancel from the membership page.

This membership includes free delivery on orders over $35, 5% back, family accounts, extra discounts, and more, so it seems pretty useful.

Credit

To get the credit, your Instacart purchase has to be charged to your Chase card. The exact amount and reimbursement period depend on your card, and Chase should post the credit directly back to your credit card.

How to make the most of this offer

Choose the right card to pay

If you still have reimbursement available, you should definitely pay with the matching Chase card. According to Instacart, the offers from different Chase cards do not stack. But I think if you add multiple Chase cards to one account, you should be able to switch payment cards and get the credit on each card.

If you’ve used up the credit on every card and still need to shop, you could consider paying with the AMEX Gold, which is said to earn 4x at supermarkets. Other cards that earn bonus points at grocery stores may also be worth trying:

Multiple accounts

These grocery delivery services generally allow multiple accounts, but it’s best not to refer accounts to each other for bonuses, since that could easily lead to account closures. Because each card’s membership period is different and independent, you can use up the membership time on one account and then register a new account to make sure you always have membership available. Once a card’s membership has expired, you can remove it from that account and add it to another account that still has membership to get the credit.

The offer runs through 2024, so there’s plenty of time...

Buy gift cards

I checked, and Instacart does sell gift cards. If you don’t have any shopping needs, you can try buying a gift card to see whether it triggers the credit. If it does, then you can buy a little gift card value with each card and combine them into one big order.
