I’ve always used Google Voice, this powerful virtual phone number, to manage bank accounts. Recently, Chase has started showing a pop-up reminder every time I log in, asking me to add a physical mobile number. A couple of days ago, I had just switched to Google Fi (which counts as a physical number). I didn’t want to use the “mitosis, turning 1 into 3” trick, so I ported that Fi number back to Google Voice, and Chase started showing the login pop-up reminder again. After I switched to a new Fi number created through that “mitosis” method, the reminder no longer appeared.
Of course, this isn’t mandatory, but it seems like you can’t turn off the pop-up notification. If you don’t change it this time, it’ll pop up again next time, over and over until you do.
Using GV to link a Chase bank account has always had one drawback too — it can’t receive SMS verification, so you usually have to use voice verification. But email verification codes have always worked as well. I’ve never changed it. I don’t know whether the two are related.
Maybe in the future, Chase will only allow physical mobile numbers to be linked to bank accounts.
