[Update] AE has noticed, and they’ve started clawing back the mistakenly issued Credit. Congrats to those who used it in time!

I saw a report on Doc that AMEX seems to still be sending Uber Credit to the Uber accounts of some cardholders who cancelled their Platinum card in 2019 (or even 2018?). The key is that the cancelled Platinum card still needs to remain linked to Uber or Uber Eats. Based on the comments, there seem to be a few different scenarios:

  • Scenario 1: The card was cancelled (or downgraded), but it remained linked to Uber (not removed). After the card was closed, the account continued receiving the corresponding Credit every month, including the $35 in December.

DP1:

DP2: this guy claims it has been going on for two years:

DP3:

DP4: after downgrading the vanilla Platinum to AMEX Green, this person kept receiving Uber Credit:

  • Scenario 2: The card was cancelled and still linked to Uber (not removed). After closure, the account only received the $35 Uber Credit in December. (My guess is these people may not have noticed whether they received it previously.)
  • Scenario 3: The card was cancelled and still linked to Uber, but no Credit was received at all, including this month’s $35 for December. There are quite a few DPs like this, so I won’t post them all; I didn’t receive it either. It’s also possible some people had already removed the card from Uber themselves.

Pretty interesting. Not sure when Uber/Amex will discover the bug. If you have an AMEX Platinum card that you plan to cancel, I’d suggest leaving it in Uber for now instead of deleting it. Maybe one month you’ll get lucky and be selected (and leaving it there doesn’t really cost you anything). If you’ve seen something similar, feel free to leave a comment with your DP!
