On December 31, 2022, the Canadian government also announced restrictions for passengers traveling to Canada from China. The new requirement took effect on January 5, 2023 (Eastern Time).
COVID-19 testing requirement
Starting at 00:01 Eastern Time on January 5, 2023, travelers age 2 or older flying from mainland China, Hong Kong, or Macao to Canada, whether on a direct flight or with a connection, must provide:
- a negative COVID-19 test result based on a sample collected within 2 days before departure (PCR or a professionally supervised antigen test); or
- if you recently had COVID-19, a positive COVID-19 test result taken at least 10 days before departure and no more than 90 days before departure
in order to be allowed to board the flight. No matter your nationality or whether you hold Canadian permanent resident status, you are not exempt from this requirement. If you are flying to Canada on a separately ticketed itinerary from outside China or from Taiwan, you do not need to provide one.
In addition, Canada will conduct wastewater testing on flights from China.
