From now through February 19, Hilton is offering a 100% bonus on purchased points, which brings the cost down to 0.5c/p. If you’re looking at a stay at an ultra-luxury hotel, or you’re just a little short of the points needed to take advantage of the fifth night free benefit, buying some points to top off your balance could make sense. It’s best to first check the cash rate and the number of points required, then do the math to see whether it’s a good deal. Hilton also has points pooling, so multiple accounts can share points and combine balances. If you need some points for a hotel booking, or want to top off for a fifth night free award stay, buying points may be worth considering. Also, if you find award availability at popular destinations such as Maldives overwater villas or New Year’s Eve in New York, buying points for the stay can sometimes be far cheaper than paying cash.

Alaska is selling miles with a 40% discount, for a cost of 2.15c/p. This promotion ends on February 16.

  • Alaska miles are among the most valuable airline miles out there. Although Alaska is not part of any alliance, you can redeem them for partner awards on AA, Hainan Airlines, and Cathay Pacific, which can be especially useful for US–China flights. You can also take advantage of one-way stopovers and some exceptionally good-value business class awards. In addition, Alaska miles are relatively hard to earn, since they can only be transferred in from Marriott points, so if you’re short a few miles for an award ticket, buying miles can make sense.
  • AS miles do not have a limit on how many miles each person can buy per year, so there is effectively no cap under this promotion.
  • Although the cost to buy miles is higher than with UA and AA, AS miles are also generally more valuable than those two programs’ miles. For more on how to use AS miles, see Introduction to AS Miles, Part 2 and Introduction to AS Miles, Part 3.
