A new in-flight 75,000-mile offer has appeared again. Just enter any 5-digit promo code shown at the top right of the in-flight page (such as 00000 or 06410) to access the application page. The welcome bonus is 75,000 miles after spending $1,000 in three months and paying the annual fee.

This welcome bonus is pretty good, so I added it to the ranking:

Benefits

  • Free checked bag: If the cardholder books with this card, the first checked bag is free. If there are other people on the same reservation, their bags are also free as well (up to three additional people), as long as this card is used for payment.
  • 10% points rebate on redemptions: Every time you redeem JetBlue points, you get 10% of the redeemed points back. Effectively, this makes the value of redeemed points and the welcome bonus 1.1x higher.
  • Annual 5,000-mile bonus: Starting in the second year, after you pay the annual fee each year, you will receive a 5,000-point JetBlue bonus. Valued at 1.2c, that effectively offsets $60 of the annual fee.
  • High-spend bonus: After spending $50,000 in a calendar year, you can enjoy one year of JetBlue Mosaic, with benefits like 2 free checked bags and priority boarding.
  • $100 off vacation packages: When you use this card to book a JetBlue Gateway Vacation Package costing more than $100, you can get a $100 discount. This is especially attractive for packages priced just over $100.
  • 50% off in-flight food and drinks
  • Free monthly FICO score: You can keep track of your credit score. See also: comparison of free credit scores

Drawback

  • The miles can only be used for flights within the US and nearby countries, and cannot be used for US-China or US-Europe flights.

Points Payback Feature

A new Points Payback feature has been added. Cardholders can use JetBlue points to offset credit card purchases of $25 or more, which is basically a cash-out option for points. Based on reports from cardholders, the current redemption rate is 3,333 points for every $25, which means a redemption value of 0.75c/p. Although Chase, AMEX, Citi, and Marriott points can all be transferred to JetBlue, 0.75c/p is still quite low. It might only be worth considering if there is a transfer bonus of 50% or more.

Also, from what I can see, the no-annual-fee JetBlue card and the business co-branded version do not mention this feature, so it is probably unique to this card.

About JetBlue

JetBlue is the sixth-largest airline in the US. It has a very dense route network in the eastern US, and also serves other major US cities. In addition, it operates international routes to and from the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and Bermuda. Although JetBlue is a low-cost carrier, it is well known for excellent service.

About the points program: JetBlue points have a fixed value, roughly around 1.2c/p. Any JetBlue flight can be booked with points, and the number of points required is tied to the current cash price of the ticket. There is also a family pooling feature, allowing you to combine points with family members and use them together. Points never expire. In addition to earning points from credit cards, paid tickets earn points based on fare price, typically at 6-8 points per dollar depending on fare class. There are also occasional promotional bonuses.

About elite status: Aside from credit card spending, you can earn JetBlue Mosaic through 30 flights + 12,000 qualifying points, or 15,000 qualifying points. JetBlue Mosaic includes perks such as priority boarding, 2 free checked bags, and 3 extra points earned per dollar.

My Take

This card is worth keeping long term for people who frequently fly JetBlue or can make good use of JetBlue points. The effective annual fee is reduced to $30 thanks to the 5,000-point annual bonus, and when you also factor in the 10% points rebate, it is basically equivalent to having no annual fee. Redeeming points is also very straightforward: you can redeem at a fixed rate for any JetBlue flight, so there is no need to worry about award availability or getting unusually poor redemption value.

If you are only after the welcome bonus, then the first-year value is $33,000*1.2-$99=$297. After that, you can downgrade to the no-annual-fee version of the JetBlue credit card.

Application

  • If you currently hold any JetBlue credit card, your application will not be approved.
  • This is an airline co-branded card. You can enter your JetBlue membership number when applying; if you do not have one, one will be assigned automatically.

Barclays Application Guide

  • Check Barclays credit card application status
  • Barclays credit card applications generally pull TransUnion (TU), and HPs on the same day can be combined
  • If you already have another Barclays card and your new application is not approved, there will usually be no hard pull
  • You can call the reconsideration line (866-408-4064) to speed up credit card approval or request another review of a denied application. They may verify your identity and address, ask why you want the card, and review your employment and repayment situation, so be prepared. You may need to move credit limit from an existing card to get approved.
