About this lawsuit

Apple has been hit with a class action lawsuit over the MacBook butterfly keyboard and will pay a total of $50,000,000. Claims are now open. People who bought an Apple MacBook with the butterfly keyboard from 2015–2019 may participate. Common issues include certain letters repeating unexpectedly, keys not typing, or the keyboard becoming unresponsive. The deadline is March 6, 2023.

Compensation eligibility and steps

This class action applies to MacBooks purchased in the United States and used by the owner; resold devices are not eligible. Compensation is divided into three groups, and the amount you receive will vary by group. The distinction is based on the following two repair types:

  1. A Topcase Replacement, which involves replacing the entire keyboard module; and
  2. A Keycap Replacement, which involves replacement of one or more keycaps.

Group breakdown:

  • Group 1: Condition 1 twice, meaning the topcase was repaired twice
  • Group 2: Condition 1 once, meaning the topcase was repaired once and the issue was not resolved
  • Group 3: Condition 2 once or more, and the issue was not resolved

Each group has a different process:

  • Group 1: You will receive an email or postcard. After confirming your address, compensation will be sent automatically.
  • Group 2 and Group 3: You need to submit information showing that the issue was not resolved (submission link). If Apple does not have records of your repair, you will also need to submit additional documentation.

If you did not receive a postcard (with a PIN and ID on it), you can use the link below to enter your information and device serial number and submit a claim.

Timeline

If you qualify, you can submit a claim. The deadline is March 6, 2023.
