After the Centurion Card’s annual fee and initiation fee both increased by $2,500 last year (the annual fee rose to $5,000, and the one-time initiation fee rose to $10,000, along with a switch to a metal card), rumors have continued to circulate that AMEX would introduce a new card positioned between Platinum and Centurion. Today, DOC reported that someone on Reddit found more suspected details in an official AMEX document (GNB Vendor Listing) on page 51.
In the introduction to the metal card designs, we can see two new names:
- Titanium (MAGSTRIPE/CONTACT CHIP) — a Titanium Card?
- Black Charge Metal 2020 (MAG/CONTACT/DUAL INTERFACE) — a Black Charge Card? Launching this year?
Given that the economy was already showing signs of a downturn this year (stocks, gold, and Bitcoin were all in free fall), it wouldn’t be surprising if AMEX rolled out a few new credit cards to encourage spending. If these card designs are real, then Centurion may no longer be the one people call the “Black Card,” because there would be a literal “Black Charge” card.
Hopefully the welcome bonus will be attractive and the benefits will be simple and generous, without too many overly complicated statement credits... (Most importantly: please don’t make it invitation-only...)
