[2024.1 Update] It looks like the restrictions are gone again. Whether this is temporary or not, if you think you may need it, it’s best to generate your referral links as soon as possible. Based on prior experience, links that were generated before expiring can still be used and still track the referral normally, even if the account later gets restricted.
I checked again over the past couple of days and found that the AMEX referral restrictions have reappeared. Even more frustrating, the number of accounts affected now seems to have increased, including some that were not restricted before. If your previously generated referral links have not expired yet, they should still work, though it’s unclear whether the referral bonus will still post normally.
Specifically, on the referral page you may be able to see referral options only for AMEX co-branded cards, but not for Amex’s own MR cards like Gold and Platinum, or cash-back cards like Blue Cash.
- You may only see referrals for the Schwab card and cards like Marriott, Hilton, and Delta, with none of your regular Amex cards showing up
- Oddly enough, on another account, the EveryDay Preferred Card somehow slipped through the cracks
If you can still see your referral links, save them as soon as possible. They could disappear any day.
Earlier Update (2023.10)
As we mentioned before, referral functionality had been restricted for some AMEX users. Only certain co-branded cards and third-party Platinum cards could generate referrals. For MR cards, Blue Cash, EveryDay, and other cards, the referral interface would not appear at all. But today, it appears that the restriction may have been lifted for everyone. You can log in to your referral page and check for yourself.
