AMEX officially announced it will launch a pre-qualification feature for credit card applications. For some users, you can see in advance whether you’re likely to be approved during the application process, and it does not affect your credit score. A hard pull only happens if you accept the card, and that can impact your credit score. It’s actually a pretty practical feature that, indirectly, lowers the barrier.

The logic is simple: if you are an AMEX customer, AMEX already performs a periodic soft pull on your credit report, recording your credit history and payment history. That alone is enough for AMEX to decide whether to approve your card. If you are a new AMEX user, a soft pull can still gather quite a bit of your information, and then it uses the income and job title you provide to make a comprehensive assessment.
