As we all know, a few months ago AMEX adjusted its offer system, which made it possible for both the AMEX MR and Cash versions of the same offer to appear on the same credit card. Many readers were likely able to make a single purchase and get both MR and cash back at the same time—for example, spend $100 and receive both $20 back and 2,000 MR. Later, AMEX seemed to discover this bug and made changes so that it became basically impossible for the MR and Cash versions to coexist on the same card. However, they could still appear on different credit cards, and you could add the MR offer to one card and the Cash offer to another. That meant you could spend $100 on one card and get $20 back, then spend $100 on another card and get 2,000 MR—effectively letting you add the same offer one extra time.

Recently (exact timing unknown), AMEX appears to have fully fixed this bug. Even if one card has the MR version of an offer and another card has the Cash version, once you add one, the other disappears. This officially means that for the same SSN, in theory you can now add only one version of the same type of AMEX offer (unless the offer terms specifically say that multiple additions are allowed).

If you still want to add the same AMEX offer more than once, there are currently two possible methods:

  • If you have an AE credit card not issued directly by AMEX itself (for example, an AE card issued by Wells Fargo), you can use the method in the article below to add certain types of offers:

  • By adding an authorized user card and registering a separate AMEX online account for that authorized user. Since offers are targeted by SSN, if your authorized user does not have an SSN—for example, if the card was opened using a passport—as long as that person has an online account, they can currently still add offers without conflicting with the primary card. The spending requirement still needs to be completed on the authorized user card itself. The online account can be set up through online chat/customer service, and the “cardholder” can have this done through your own chat session. Of course, if your authorized user does have an SSN and does not use AMEX offers personally, that can also let you add the offer multiple times under your overall account setup.
  • Frequently replacing the credit card might also bypass this, YMMV. No one seems bored enough to test this systematically at the moment; I triggered it once by accident.
