Rumor has it that Amex will roll out a major offer tomorrow to counter Chase’s CSR.

We waited and waited, and what finally arrived was a letdown on the level of the old SPG two free nights signup-bonus drama.

The gist is that the Platinum Card’s earnings on airfare booked through the official website have increased from 1x to 5x.

And then? That’s it…

After the earlier rumors started circulating, points-and-miles enthusiasts got very excited and happily helped Amex design all kinds of perks, even the name. But Amex stayed lofty as ever and refused to lower itself, so the cries of doom have been coming one after another.

Looking back at this offer, 5x is honestly pretty generous by current market standards. But the Platinum Card still doesn’t come with trip delay insurance or airfare reimbursement, so this benefit is still better than nothing. In the eyes of card players, though, it still can’t match the Prestige and the CSR.

Amex, you win!
