I opened my AMEX Green in January 2019. AMEX Green was officially refreshed at the end of last year, and the annual fee after the refresh is $150. When my annual fee posted this January, it was still $95.
- AMEX has long had an unofficial policy: for existing cardholders who had the card before the refresh, the first annual fee after the refresh usually remains under the old annual fee policy.
I also called the number on the back of the card. The first representative said there was nothing available, so I hung up and called again. I directly asked the second representative to transfer me to the customer relation department. After being transferred, I was offered two retention offers, and I chose 7,500 MR, which was just enough to offset the annual fee. Specifically:
- Spend $1,000 within 3 months, get a $50 statement credit
- Spend $1,000 within 3 months, get 7,500 MR
By the way, the refreshed Green can still pull up a 45,000 MR welcome bonus at the moment, which is pretty solid overall:
Applications submitted by January 15 (inclusive) all came with the Away reimbursement, and the Away reimbursement can be completed within the next 90 days. Many people have probably already received their physical card, so don’t forget to use this reimbursement.
- Away purchase link (new users get a $20 bonus) (requires a US IP) If that doesn’t open, try this link
- It’s recommended to register an account directly so you can track the shipment. If you don’t register an account, you can also purchase as a Guest through the link above (you’ll need to enter your email). The $20 off will then appear at checkout as Referral Credit.
The reimbursement posts pretty quickly and should trigger in about 2-3 business days. Below is how mine posted, showing as Away Statement Credit:
