AMEX recently announced a series of important changes that will directly affect the cardholder experience!

  • Membership Rewards update: Starting March 31, 2025, cardholders will no longer be able to redeem Membership Rewards points at www.newegg.com and www.staples.com.
  • ShopRunner benefit ending: Also starting March 31, 2025, ShopRunner membership will no longer be offered as a cardholder benefit. Members currently enrolled through AMEX will continue to receive the benefit for the remainder of their current ShopRunner membership year, and related benefits will continue for two additional years after that, subject to ShopRunner’s applicable policies and terms.
  • Auto Purchasing Program will end: Starting April 28, 2025, the AMEX Auto Purchasing Program will be discontinued, and cardholders will no longer receive benefits from this program. Any offers through this program, including upfront pricing offers, will expire on the stated end date.

The redemption rate for Membership Rewards at Staples and Newegg is so poor that almost nobody uses it anyway. I’d barely even heard of the Auto Purchasing Program. ShopRunner benefits will effectively continue for another two years, so the impact there is limited as well. Overall, AMEX is cutting some fringe benefits here—hopefully that means more useful perks down the road.
