Some people have received an email from their Citi AA credit card saying that the Reduced Mileage Award benefit will be discontinued on October 1. This is a benefit unique to AA co-branded cards: when booking award tickets on eligible domestic U.S. routes, you can get a mileage discount of up to 7,500 miles. These routes are generally between smaller cities and smaller airports, and cash prices on these routes can sometimes be higher than between major cities, so this benefit could be quite valuable if you were able to use it. Really a shame to see it go.
The email also mentions that AA Web Special awards will replace it. In fact, this is part of AA's dynamic award pricing system, where the miles required for an award ticket can decrease as prices change.
The Reduced Mileage Award benefit associated with your Citi / AAdvantage card will be discontinued as of October 1, 2021. As an AAdvantage member, you can save miles on award travel by booking a Web Special award. Like Reduced Mileage Awards, Web Special awards provide great savings – starting at 6,000 miles one-way. According to the official webpage for this benefit, eligible routes are updated once each quarter, so it looks like there will be no more Reduced Mileage Awards after September.
