Amazon is running another targeted Citi ThankYou Points promotion. Eligible users who use a certain number of Citi ThankYou Points to pay for Amazon purchases can get up to a $25 Amazon gift card.

  • Use a total of 2,500 Citi ThankYou Points to offset a $20 Amazon order and get a $10 Amazon gift card.
  • Then use an additional 15,625 Citi ThankYou Points to offset a $125 Amazon order and get a second Amazon gift card worth $15.

Both tiers can be completed, so you can get up to $25 in Amazon gift cards total. Each user can earn the reward for each tier once per calendar year.

The first tier is decent. Amazon’s redemption rate for Citi ThankYou Points is only 0.8 cents per point, so 2,500 points can only cover $20. After completing the first tier, you also get a $10 gift card, which means 2,500 points can generate $30 in total value, improving the redemption value to 1.2 cents per point.

If you redeem 2,500 Citi ThankYou Points for cash directly, you would usually get $25. So the extra value from the first tier is about $5. It’s not amazing, but it may still be worth considering if you’re eligible.

The second tier is not worth doing. It requires 15,625 points to cover $125, and then you get a $15 Amazon gift card, for a total value of only $140, or about 0.896 cents per point.

By comparison, redeeming 15,625 points for cash directly would usually get you $156.25. Even after factoring in the $15 gift card, you’d still come up $16.25 short versus a direct cash redemption, so there is basically no reason to do this tier.
