4/19 Update】After adding items to your Baby Registry, if you buy any item of $10 or more, you can get an extra gift. Examples include a Bath Toy, Teether, Straw Bottle, etc. If you’re already buying baby supplies, go ahead and try it—there may be a free gift waiting for you. This gift can be stacked with the 15% coupon given after completing the Baby Registry.

7/28 Update】If you are an Amazon Prime member and set up a Baby Registry, once your total purchase of registry items is above $1,000, you will get a $100 Amazon credit. This credit can only be used for select diapers, wipes, and diaper cream shipped and sold from Amazon.com. So if you need to buy baby essentials, this is basically like getting a free $100.

Amazon Registry Overview

An Amazon Registry is basically an online wish list. You create one registry, then add the items you want to buy. You can share the registry details with friends and family so that when they buy gifts for you, they can choose from your Registry. This is fairly common in the U.S. and works well, because it helps avoid duplicate gifts and instead gets you the things you actually need.

On Amazon, there are two common types of registry:

  • Wedding Registry: for people planning a wedding, so wedding guests can choose gifts easily.
  • Baby Registry: for people who are expecting a baby, so Baby Shower guests can choose gifts.

A Registry does more than help you create a gift list. It can also give you pretty good discounts on your own Amazon shopping and bring free gifts. The following sections explain how to use these two registries.

Wedding Registry

Offer details

If you create a Wedding Registry on Amazon, you will receive a discount code after your Registry is complete. This code gives 20% off on Amazon for Prime members or 10% off for non-Prime members. That’s a solid discount for most Amazon purchases.

Step-by-step

  • Fill in information, including bride and groom names, wedding date, and privacy settings (make sure you check the discount option).
  • Finish setup
  • Add items you want to your registry. You can use Popular Wedding Gifts.
  • Or search for the items you want and click Add to Wedding Registry directly on the product page.
  • Other people buy items from your Registry: they can use this Registry search link, enter your name or your spouse’s name to find it, and buy items on your Registry. At checkout, the shipping address will be yours!
  • Get the Completion reward: If purchased items in your Registry total $500–$999.99, you’ll receive a max 20% off Amazon coupon after your listed wedding date. The code is valid for one use only. Prime members get 20% off and non-Prime members get 10% off, on any item sold by Amazon. The maximum discount is $200 or $100, which is equivalent to 20% or 10% on $1,000 of purchases.
  • If your purchase amount is above $1,000, Prime members can get up to $300 off (for example, $1,500 in eligible purchases gets 20% off).

How to use it

If you’re not yet married but already have a partner, you can create a Registry for yourself and add items you already need to buy anyway (they can be any Amazon items, even Amazon gift cards). Then ask your partner to purchase them. This is an easy way to gradually reach the $500 or $1,000 requirement, and eventually get a very useful 20% off coupon.

If you’re already married or still single and still want the 20% off coupon, does that mean you have to be married at some point? It doesn’t. As long as another Amazon account finds and buys from your Registry, you’re good.

Important notes

  • You must create the Registry at least 30 days before your wedding date and complete the required spending before the wedding to receive the discount code.
  • The discount code is valid for 90 days after your wedding date, for one-time use only, and only on items sold by Amazon. It does not apply to gift cards (but if you buy $800 in gift cards plus $200 in physical items, you can still use the code for a $200 reduction).
  • The discount is 20% off for Prime and 10% off for non-Prime. Prime Student and Prime Trial do not qualify.
