Mastercard and American Airlines are running a promotion: if an AAdvantage member buys one AA ticket between August 23 and September 20, with a pre-tax fare of at least $60, they can receive a $50 discount code that can be used on AA flights.

Tip: No immediate travel plans? You can buy a fully refundable ticket to earn the discount code, then refund the ticket afterward.

How to participate

  • Register: you must use this link to register your AAdvantage membership number. You do not need to register a credit card number.
  • Ticket purchase window: buy an AA ticket between August 23 and September 20 (limited to 100,000 redemptions, so I recommend buying sooner rather than later).
  • The ticket must be purchased under your own AAdvantage account, and payment must be made with a U.S. Mastercard (including personal credit cards, personal debit cards, and small business cards).
  • By around November 11, AA will send a $50 discount code to your registered email address. The discount code requires a base fare of at least $60 before taxes and fees to use, and the ticket purchased with the code must be for travel by March 15, 2022.

My suggestion is to buy a refundable ticket first and lock in the discount code whether or not you need it right now. There is essentially no cost, and you can decide later how to use it. The terms do not say whether the discount code must be used by the original recipient, so there is some chance it could be used by someone else.
