Starting 3/9, Japan will temporarily bar entry for travelers from China and South Korea

On March 5, Japan time, the Japanese government announced a temporary entry ban affecting travelers from China and South Korea.

• The ban is currently set to remain in effect from 12:00 a.m. on March 9, 2020 through March 31, 2020.
• Visa-free entry to Japan for residents of Hong Kong and Macau has been suspended.
• Japanese visas currently held by residents of mainland China will temporarily become invalid during this period.
• Foreign nationals entering Japan after transiting through China or South Korea must quarantine for 14 days at a designated location, including Japanese residents returning to Japan.
• Flights from China and South Korea to Japan may land only at Tokyo Narita NRT and Osaka Kansai KIX airports.
• The restriction also applies to foreign nationals with a history of stay in Iran or South Korea. In addition, starting at 12:00 a.m. on the 7th, parts of South Korea and Iran will be added to the list of “entry prohibited” areas.

At present, the Japanese government’s entry restrictions apply only to foreign nationals who have stayed in certain areas, including China’s Hubei and Zhejiang provinces, and South Korea’s Daegu Metropolitan City and Cheongdo County in North Gyeongsang Province.
